THE 2025 COURSE IS OPEN FOR ENROLLMENT SEPTEMBER 9TH - 16TH

Hi, I'm Bärbel
YOUR REPERTOIRE TEACHER (AND PATTERN HISTORY NERD 🤓)
When I started learning surface pattern design - over a decade ago - I quickly fell in love with historical styles like Toile de Jouy, Indian Florals, Arts and Crafts and Damask, and dreamed of being able to create sophisticated and complex patterns like that too.
But I didn't know how, it seemed so difficult, and there were no classes to show me. So I set out to figure it out on my own.
After months of research, studies and trial and errors, I finally managed to create my first historically inspired patterns.
What I didn't expect, was that along the way I would also develop my own style, and techniques for creating more advanced patterns and compositions.
Now I want to share that knowledge, methods and techniques with you!
I created Repertoire in 2022 to help aspiring pattern designers build their knowledge about patterns, drawing and composition skills, so that you can create the patterns of your dreams too - and master the craft of surface pattern design!
xo, Bärbel
“Repertoire completely changed the way I approach pattern design.”

Let our alumni tell you how Repertoire transformed their abilities and skills:

"This course changed everything"
“The most transformational impact from Repertoire was learning to design with intention. Instead of creating motifs randomly, I now build patterns with structure, harmony, and historical awareness.
This shift gave me a stronger foundation, more confidence, and a clearer artistic voice as a designer. Before taking Repertoire, I loved creating patterns - but I often felt unsure about how to bring everything together. This course gave me the clarity and structure I didn’t know I needed."
~ Guylaine Charlebois, Canada
“Repertoire and Bärbel opened up a wonderful world for me!"
“Before starting Repertoire, I only knew how to create allover patterns using Illustrator's pattern tool. I had no idea about the vast world behind prints, the history of patterns, and all the different types of repeats that exist and how to create them!
Thanks to Repertoire, I started to feel much more confident in my abilities, and I even created my own scarves. This allowed me to fulfill a dream of mine, and I also received a lot of positive feedback from friends and strangers. Some even commissioned custom pieces!"
- Giulia Balsarin, Italy

"This is the best surface pattern course I have ever taken."
"Repertoire really pushed me to create every day, so that by the end of it I had enough patterns to fill 3 collections and one mini-collection, which I pulled into a portfolio and published on the internet.
Learning different pattern structures has allowed me to create complex patterns that I can feel proud of. It also gave me the confidence to enter into design competitions that get my work in front of actual art directors. I don't think I would have felt confident enough to do this without Repertoire.”
~Â Sue Cheer, New Zealand
"The greatest shift Repertoire gave me was understanding the structure of a pattern from the very beginning. Before, I would often dive in without a clear plan. Now I approach each design with intention, knowing exactly how the elements will connect and repeat.
That clarity has not only improved the quality of my work but made the entire process more fluid, creative and fulfilling. It’s the foundation that has allowed me to grow as both an artist and a professional designer.”
- Kyhala Dunn, Australia

Words from students

"If you're looking at your current work and feeling like you just aren't able to create the vision that you see in your head, Repertoire is absolutely the next step for you. You will learn about so many styles and techniques that will serve as new tools to add to your toolkit.
I can look at any pattern and know exactly what I would do if I wanted to create something similar, and that has given me a huge boost of confidence as a designer."
~ Rachel Brown, USA

"I aspired to be able to create intricate patterns but it felt overwhelming. During Repertoire, the overwhelm started to fade with each step of the course. Seeing how each pattern is broken down and explained was extremely helpful.
Repertoire has given me the ability to design beautiful patterns that look more sophisticated and has gotten me noticed by companies!"
~ Ali Poulson, USA

"There is so much information to take in that I now feel more confident going forward with client requests for design work. Since taking this course, I have had 3 of my designs chosen as top picks by trend analysts as well as a fabric company for printing.
I am much more confident with my design work and feel that I can tackle any project or design request with confidence."
~ Lisette Niemand, UK
"I'm very  proud of the work I make - and I credit Bärbel and Repertoire for that..."
Â
- Wendy Digel, USA

"Before taking Repertoire I was creating very simple designs without really knowing where to start. My patterns lacked clear structure and direction.
Now I feel that I'm creating more complex and well-structured patterns. I've gained a better understanding of different design styles and am learning to apply them while adding my own style."
~ Isabelle De Ligne, Australia

"Before Repertoire I knew how to put a pattern together but had no idea how to create anything more complex than a scattered repeat. I was longing to create more complex patterns.
Repertoire taught me SO much. I feel confident creating any style of pattern now, and I credit it with helping me to find my signature style as I created so much while following the course."
~ Katie Beardsley, UK

“I really feel that pattern designing has become my new superpower. I have used what I've learned in Repertoire to take my designing up many levels, and I've started to see my own interpretations of the historical styles expressed quite spontaneously."
~ Katherine Moffat, Canada
"Repertoire has been  instrumental in my pattern journey..."
Â
- Anna Black, Scotland / Portugal

“Repertoire helped me make a portfolio I am truly proud of and gain the confidence to start pitching. I feel truly like an educated expert in pattern design now. "
~ Mairin Kareli, USA

"Through Repertoire, I learned not only how to create patterns properly, but also a spectra of different types of patterns. I learned how to plan a repeat instead of just trying to put a bunch of motifs together in Illustrator.
Now I truly feel that I can design any type of pattern and I understand the different structures.”
~ Karen Gomes, India

“My designs have improved significantly and I even got two commission jobs, one for acanthus scrolls and one for an Indian Floral wallpaper. I am in the process of compiling my portfolio to start reaching out to companies for licensing and I wouldn't have gotten the confidence to do so without Bärbel's help and seeing improvement in my designs."
~ Sampada Phadke, Canada
