The Repertoire course is for you who have started your pattern design studies and know the foundations of surface pattern design. You have taken a class or a few - and now want to learn more!

Repertoire is not for complete beginners. It's not teaching surface pattern design or Adobe Illustrator from scratch.

You should have created at least a few digital pattern repeats before, even if very basic.

In Repertoire we use Adobe Illustrator and you need to know your way around this program in order to follow along and get the most from the experience.

Or be proficient in other programs like Photoshop and can figure out how to "translate" my steps in Illustrator to your preferred program.

If you feel that you can't draw, you have actually come to the perfect place, because in Repertoire you will learn helpful methods and techniques for drawing different types of motifs, with step-by-step drawing tutorials that show you exactly how.

You will also learn that there are so many ways to create patterns and motifs. In many cases you don't even have to draw :-).

But when it comes to developing your drawing - I've got you!

If you have created patterns for a while, or are an established professional already, you may breeze through some of the most basic tutorials. But you will also get lessons on pattern history, learn about patterns and styles you may never have heard of before, and we will do style studies that will help you see the patterns with new perspectives. And you will learn new methods and techniques for creating patterns in various compositions.

We work a lot with how you can use the inspiration you find in classic styles and make your own interpretation, add your own twist and create something new and original.

All lessons are pre-recorded and the live Q&A's are recorded and will be provided as replays afterwards.

Repertoire is self-paced and you can choose to follow along with the curriculum as the modules and lessons are released each week, or you can choose to watch them at your own pace.

As you have unlimited access to the 2024 course, even after the 12 weeks have come to an end, you can come back and rewatch as many times as you want and need. So there is no missing out, or falling behind.

As I use Adobe Illustrator to create the final repeating pattern in my design process, this is the program that will be used in examples and tutorials where we work on the digital steps.

I will not use or teach Photoshop or other apps, but there will be a couple of demonstrations on how you can use an iPad and Procreate in your process.

But if you prefer other programs than Illustrator, and are proficient in them, you will be able to "translate" the steps I do in Illustrator and apply them to your process. 

There are many lessons and tutorials where we won't use Illustrator at all.

No, you will not learn about the business side of surface design in Repertoire. There will be no lessons about marketing, how to contact companies, licensing your work or print-on-demand services.

Repertoire is all about designing patterns, learning the craft, becoming knowledgable about patterns and acquire tools and techniques for creating different types of patterns and motifs.

It's about learning to create a wide range of patterns - to learn the rules and so that you can then break them with confidence.

However... questions about pitching, creating portfolios and marketing will come up as questions during the weekly live calls - and in the community. And they will not be left unanswered ;-).

You can choose to follow the curriculum and as the modules and lessons are released. Then I recommend that you set aside 1-3 hours a day for watching lessons and practicing the techniques you will learn, alternatively 1-3 full days each week.

But since you have access to the course indefinitely, you can take as long as you want to complete the lessons. You can go at a pace that works for you. We also have 3 implementation weeks, and extended support until December 3rd.

The overlap with other classes is only a small part of what you’ll find inside Repertoire. Here, we go much deeper, exploring many more historic styles, classic pattern types and the techniques and processes for creating patterns of varying complexity. In fact, you’ll discover around 30 pattern types, historic styles, and motifs that are unique to Repertoire and not available anywhere else.
